The area selected is outlined with flashing pixels. If I choose to cut the area out with a simple "Cut" command, I have the robot all by itself. One click with the magic wand, and I've selected the entire area outside of the robot. I started by opening a blank, transparent canvas and pasting the Instructables robot into it as a layer. Using the magic wand with illustrations, logos, and simple photos The easiest images to alter are ones like the illustration of the Instructables robot, which is basically a collection of flat colors with very clear outlines. As I did, hold down the shift key as you click to add more areas (pixels) to your selection. Once you begin using the magic wand, you may decide you need to combine additional flashing outline areas to your overall selection. Adjust tolerance down to make your magic wand pickier about choosing the area you want to cut out. Adjust the tolerance up to make the magic wand select pixels that are even more like the one you're clicking on. Hit the delete key or choose Cut from the Edit menu to delete selected areas.Īdjusting the magic wand What the magic wand is doing is looking at the overall photo and choosing pixels that are similar to the one you're clicking on.Hold down the shift key to add more areas to your selection (if needed). The magic wand will outline the area selected with flashing dotted lines. Select the magic wand tool from the toolbar. You can also send it to a different device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi direct, upload it to Google Drive, or send it via email, SMS, WhatsApp, Line, or Facebook Messenger among others. You've got nothing to lose and an undo button with you at all times. Once you're happy with the image, you can save it to your phone's memory, or share it to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The app has a number of fonts you can download, but there's also a default version with regular type and enough formatting options to use on the go.Īutodesk Pixlr also has more fun features you can use on images, including filters, borders and stickers.Īll of these effects and features are free to use, but some do require a download the first time around, so it's important to remember that when using Autodesk Pixlr in areas with limited connectivity. The 'history' button lets you undo any edits made to the image, by sliding a brush up and down the screen over the full image or a selected part.Īlso useful is the 'type' feature which allows you to add text to the image – a nice touch if you're planning to use the photos in an audio slideshow later. If you keep your smartphone's screen brightness turned down, remember to turn it back up before saving any changes to the image – as the end result could look quite different on fully-bright screen, especially when it comes to saturation or contrast. Under the 'color' tab, you can adjust the hue, saturation, and light of an image. To make your image sharper and your subjects stand out, use the 'sharpen' button and then drag the slider to apply the effect more or less, until you are happy with the result. This feature is particularly helpful to brighten up buildings and colours in pictures taken outside on a cloudy and grey day, for example. You can customise the size of the brush and the opacity of the brightness layer, and then apply it to your preferred section of the photo by sliding your finger across the screen. The 'brighten' option (with the diamond symbol), lets you fix the lighting on selected parts of the image by using a brush. It's always easiest to get the lighting right before you take the image in the first place, but in Autodesk Pixlr you can fine tune your photo and correct any mistakes.īy tapping on the adjustment button with your finger, you get a number of options to fix your image's contrast for example, or to sharpen the photo. The app then allows you to crop the image or adjust its exposure, brightness, contrast, and more to get the best possible version of your photo. With Autodesk Pixlr, you can edit images already in your smartphone's memory – you can import photos from your phone's image gallery, Dropbox, or Google Drive – or take photos using the in-app camera. With journalists on the scene of a story now also often expected to send photographs back to the newsroom, having an easy image editor on your phone can help to really maximise the potential of your smartphone's camera. How is it of use to journalists: Pixlr is a comprehensive browser photo editor, and Autodesk Pixlr is the mobile version to quickly fine tune photos taken with your smartphone. And, these new stories of Wilson's are something else they're funny, raw and beautiful and, for sure, they killed me. Remember how Holden is always saying variations of, "That killed me" about people or books that deeply affect him? There's a lot of Salinger in Wilson's writing - the wit, the vulnerability and the cosmic sadness. She knew what it felt like."Īll the while I was reading Baby, You're Gonna Be Mine, I kept hearing one of Holden Caulfield's signature lines in my head. A narcissist, the son thinks the end of his musical career is a unique blow, but his widowed mom knows otherwise: "She understood exactly what was happening, that he had devoted his life to something that had ended before he was ready. Much to her dread, the son moves back home. In that title story, a mom gets a phone call from her son, a once moderately successful rock musician whose band, Dead Finches, has just broken up. Other stories, like "Housewarming" and the title story feature parents who've surrendered to the knowledge that their angry adult children are beyond saving. Contrary to expectation, nothing sexual happens but, a game of make-believe the two play together is devastating in the way it exposes the pain that lives within the emotionally stunted priest. For instance, there's a quiet stunner of a story called "A Signal to the Faithful," about a sensitive, fatherless boy named Edwin and the troubled priest who befriends him. In ingenious ways, all the stories here are about surrender, whether they're about a character's surrendering to loss or human failing. She wanted, I now understood, to be stronger than anything evil. My girlfriend and I sat on the floor and watched the oldest do her thing with the video game, finding no weapon to her liking, eventually giving in to her inevitable and quick death. She's obsessed with a video game about the apocalypse, where she has to try to kill zombies with weapons like "a baseball bat with nails in it."Īt first, Wilson, seems to be riffing on the old "decay of the family" theme, but his story grows more nuanced so that when Cam again looks at that tough teenager playing her vile video game, his reaction shifts into a commentary on the tragic nature of life: Just as we're taking in that mess of information about the quality of the relationships here, we meet those aforementioned kids, whom the narrator describes as "as close to feral as you can get, like animals dressed up in camouflage jumpsuits." The most disciplined is the oldest girl, who's around 14. "If they end up killing each other," my girlfriend told me, "I think I'm the one who gets custody of the kids." I didn't have to say anything in response because she knew as well as I did that I would not be around if that scenario ever became a reality. It was almost midnight when my girlfriend got a call from her sister, who had been arrested for taking a kebab skewer at a cookout and stabbing her husband.Įven though it was over an hour away, I drove my girlfriend to their house so she could watch her nieces and nephews until their parents found a way to get back home. Take the opening lines of the very first story, called "Scroll Through the Weapons." A young man named Cam is narrating: That distinctive sweet-tart flavor of Wilson's writing is triple-concentrated in his new short story collection, Baby, You're Gonna Be Mine. What I love most about Wilson's writing is that he'll start off with these goofy, almost sitcom-type contrived premises and from there create stories that knock you out with the force of their emotional truth. Without being pat about it, Wilson drove home the realization that every family constitutes its own rag-tag troupe of performance artists and that children are mostly at the mercy of their parents' "acts."įamily was also a concern in Wilson's second novel, Perfect Little World, about a Gilligan's Island-type collection of adults and children who participate in an experiment about child rearing. That novel delved into the life of a husband and wife pair of performance artists who worked their young children into their pieces. I've been a fan of Kevin Wilson's writing since 2011, when I read his debut novel The Family Fang. And we take all the listeners we can and I like to entertain people and I can tell you do too. Know, when you got hold on me, you said you’d been listen to the podcast for a while and I appreciate that. Gary, thank you so much for having me on your show. A simplified selection of quality blinds, shades, and shutters at low prices. Independent publishers can pay 100, the same fee. I went to the shade store for my renovation because I was told I would have a "higher end" experience with product and service than other much less expensive brands like 3 Day Blinds, etc. According to the official announcement, Epic’s new move to rival Steam is to allow indie and mid-sized publishers to self-publish on the store. This will certainly send out a strong message of deterrence.īut the problem is that actually stopping the people smugglers is made far more difficult by the machinations of the Government's cynical opponents. I have not yet seen the Home Secretary's Bill, but what we know so far seems both plausible and workable.Īs the Mail revealed yesterday, tough new measures are to be unveiled to ensure that anyone caught trying to enter Britain by a dangerous 'irregular route', such as a Channel crossing in a small boat, would face a lifetime ban from the country - and be deported. I applaud both their determination and courage. Just a few weeks on from the report's publication, it seems the Home Office has listened - and fast. Our proposed solution was equally simple: 'No person who enters the UK unlawfully on a small boat from a safe state ever be permitted to settle in the UK'. Rishi Sunak's Government is ready to put a stop to dangerous illegal immigration (file image) After all, a great majority of the public understands this instinctively. In short, it explained we simply cannot continue to allow illegal migration to be masterminded by these gangs, with all the consequent damage to our education system, our housing, our economy and our crime levels. With more than 45,000 migrants making the illegal journey across the Channel from Europe in 2022 alone, I co-authored a document for the Policy Exchange think-tank last month, titled 'How to legislate about small boats', aimed at dissecting the existential problem Britain faces. But, finally, Home Secretary Suella Braverman is demonstrating her serious intent. So will the hard-Left, aided by intransigent Whitehall civil servants - often termed the 'Blob' - intent on thwarting every Tory policy. There has always been only one way to do this: dismantling the hugely lucrative business model used by ruthless people smuggling gangs. At last, Rishi Sunak's Government is ready to put a stop to dangerous illegal immigration, with a zero-tolerance policy. The value of suchĪ hook is a list of functions the functions are called with noĪrguments and their values are completely ignored. Most of these variables have names ending with ‘ -hook’. The following is a list of some hook variables that let you provideįunctions to be called from within Emacs on suitable occasions. Emacs supports a client/server mode where new files are opened in a running instance of Emacs.Next: Index, Previous: Standard Keymaps, Up: Emacs Lisp Appendix H Standard Hooks This saves you from having to load configuration and packages for every new file you open. This involves two configuration steps: using EmacsClient to open files, and running the Emacs server. This page focuses on how to launch the server at startup, a.k.a. This feature was introduced in Emacs 23.1. In Emacs 26.1+, you can force the daemon to run in the foreground: emacs -fg-daemon Daemon mode starts Emacs loading the user’s standard init files, but headless. Systemd is the supported method of running applications at startup on most Linux distributions. The following configuration file rvice will be included in the standard Emacs installation as of 26.1. All you need to do is copy this to ~/.config/systemd/user/rvice. Save it as and then install it: systemctl daemon-reload Instead, you can use this unit file: ĭescription=Emacs: the extensible, self-documenting text editorĮxecStart=/usr/bin/emacs -daemon -user %uĮxecStop=/usr/bin/emacsclient -eval "( progn (setq kill-emacs-hook 'nil) (kill-emacs))" ĮxecStop=/usr/bin/emacsclient -eval "(kill-emacs)"Įnable the unit by running: systemctl enable -user emacsĬentOS 7 does not support -user configurations for systemd. There are other ways to launch emacs -daemon depending on your requirements. One easy way to start the Emacs daemon is via “Settings > Session and Startup > Application Autostart”. You can also place an init script to place in /etc/init.d/emacsd. Gentoo includes support for running Emacs as a daemon in the app-emacs/emacs-daemon package. emerge app-emacs/emacs-daemonĮvery user who wants to connect to an Emacs server must have an own instance of the daemonized Emacs. The init script automatically determines the user by its name, so you create a symbolic link (do not copy the script, or you will miss eventual updates!) in your /etc/init.d directory: ln -s emacs /etc/init.d/emacs. This may be added to the boot sequence (and will run under the user’s privileges) rc-update add emacs. username defaultįurther customizations can be done through the /etc/conf.d/emacs file, which is extensively commented. You may also create individual /etc/conf.d/emacs. username files for “multiplexed” user configuration. To restart the daemon after changing the user configuration, run systemctl -user emacs restart Just add the relevant configuration option as described in the manual. This can then be installed in ~/Library/LaunchAgents and loaded via: launchctl load -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/įor further instructions see Microsoft Windows Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs The easiest solution is to use a tool like Lingon to create the plist file or can create one manually like this: If you’re running Emacs 23 or higher, you can run Emacs Daemon via macOS’s launchd. You can run emacs -daemon by creating a shortcut file or. See EmacsMsWindowsIntegration for details. Beauty alone is not art, but art can be made of, about or for beautiful things. Beauty is whatever aspect of that or anything else that makes an individual feel positive or grateful. Otherwise their art is like all other art: its only function is to be experienced, appraised, and understood (or not).Īrt is a means to state an opinion or a feeling, or else to create a different view of the world, whether it be inspired by the work of other people or something invented that’s entirely new. They have made a stand against these norms in their art. Take Picasso, Munch, Schoenberg, to name just three. The game changers – the square pegs, so to speak – are those who saw traditional standards of beauty and decided specifically to go against them, perhaps just to prove a point. Of course there are standards of beauty – that which is seen as ‘traditionally’ beautiful. The fundamental difference between art and beauty is that art is about who has produced it, whereas beauty depends on who’s looking. Aesthetic responses are often underdetermined by the artist’s intentions. Furthermore, ‘communication’ is not the best word for what I have in mind because it implies an unwarranted intention about the content represented. But isn’t the difference between this and a Freddy Krueger movie just one of degree? On the other hand, my definition would exclude graphics used in advertising or political propaganda, as they are created as a means to an end and not for their own sakes. An older brother who sneaks up behind his younger sibling and shouts “Booo!” can be said to be creating art. One of the initial reactions to this approach may be that it seems overly broad. The content of that experience in its cultural context may determine whether the artwork is popular or ridiculed, significant or trivial, but it is art either way. Therefore, art is the intentional communication of an experience as an end-in-itself. And although a person can have an ‘aesthetic experience’ of a natural scene, flavor or texture, art is different in that it is produced. Similarly, the aesthetic attitude requires you to treat artistic experience as an end-in-itself: art asks us to arrive empty of preconceptions and attend to the way in which we experience the work of art. When you step out of a river and onto an island, you’ve reached your destination. Thus, works of art rise like islands from a current of more pragmatic concerns. Now a theme in aesthetics, the study of art, is the claim that there is a detachment or distance between works of art and the flow of everyday life. Consequently, I believe that defining art based upon its content is a doomed enterprise. Works of art may elicit a sense of wonder or cynicism, hope or despair, adoration or spite the work of art may be direct or complex, subtle or explicit, intelligible or obscure and the subjects and approaches to the creation of art are bounded only by the imagination of the artist. So beauty in art is eternally subjective. But neither the artist nor the observer can be certain of successful communication in the end. Beautiful art is successful in portraying the artist’s most profound intended emotions, the desired concepts, whether they be pretty and bright, or dark and sinister. In the context of art, beauty is the gauge of successful communication between participants – the conveyance of a concept between the artist and the perceiver. Beauty is rather a measure of affect, a measure of emotion. There are plenty of pretty pictures available at the neighborhood home furnishing store but these we might not refer to as beautiful and it is not difficult to find works of artistic expression that we might agree are beautiful that are not necessarily pretty. What then is beauty? Beauty is much more than cosmetic: it is not about prettiness. Art is to be found in how the media is used, the way in which the content is expressed. But the content that we instill on or in our chosen media is not in itself the art. And because words alone are not enough, we must find some other vehicle to carry our intent. It is the communication of intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone. Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires, but it is even more personal than that: it’s about sharing the way we experience the world, which for many is an extension of personality.
